Safranbolu is a small town located in the Karabük Province of Turkey, in the Black Sea region. It is renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman-era architecture, traditional houses, and historical sites. Safranbolu’s unique charm and cultural heritage have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
One of the main attractions in Safranbolu is its historic center, known as the Old Town or Çarşı. The Old Town is characterized by its narrow winding streets, cobblestone alleys, and traditional Ottoman houses, known as “Safranbolu evleri.” These houses feature distinct architectural elements, such as wooden facades, bay windows, and ornate interiors. Many of them have been converted into guesthouses, allowing visitors to experience the town’s authentic atmosphere.
Cinci Han and İzzet Mehmet Pasha Mosque are notable landmarks within the Old Town. Cinci Han is a well-preserved Ottoman caravanserai, which once served as a lodging and trading place for merchants. İzzet Mehmet Pasha Mosque, built in the 18th century, showcases exquisite Ottoman architecture and intricate tile work.
Safranbolu is also known for its traditional Turkish arts and crafts. The town is famous for its saffron production, and visitors can learn about saffron cultivation and purchase saffron-related products. The Old Town’s shops offer a variety of locally made handicrafts, including copperware, ceramics, textiles, and traditional Turkish sweets.
